Yule Goat Stoneware Ornament

$20.00

Handmade from speckled stoneware, this rustic Nordic-inspired Christmas ornament features three Yule goats, or julbocks, surrounded by sprigs of holly. The design is stamped into the clay, and a red-brown underglaze is rubbed into the recesses to add depth. Finally, the front of each ornament is finished with a transparent glaze to highlight the dark specks in this beautiful speckled stoneware clay. These ornaments are available with the outlined design only or with the holly sprigs filled in red and dark green for a pop of color. Each ornament comes with a faux suede cord for hanging and arrives in a gift box.

A traditional Scandinavian symbol of Christmas, the julbock predates Santa as the original bringer of presents on Christmas morning. The julbock dates back to pre-Christian Scandinavian spiritual practices and likely originated with the Nordic god Thor and his goats, Tanngrisnir (Gap-Tooth) and Tanngnjóstr (Tooth-Grinder), who pulled his flying chariot and provided food every evening by being slaughtered and then rising again the following morning. Scholars believe that the tradition of symbolically sacrificing a goat on Christmas to honor Thor eventually morphed into the folklore of the julbock, a humanoid goat figure who brought presents and ensured that preparations were done correctly for Christmas celebrations.
