"Snow White" Porcelain Folklore Egg

$75.00

Our Folklore collection of porcelain eggs draws inspiration from Pysanky, a Ukrainian tradition of egg decorating that originated in Pagan times. Handcrafted in fine porcelain and painted in rich cranberry red, each egg showcases a scene from a beloved story alongside traditional Pysanky motifs.

This hand-painted sgraffito style egg interprets the tale of Snow White through traditional pysanky symbolism and folklore imagery, rendered entirely in mirrored compositions to reflect the central role of the mirror in the story.

On each side of the egg, the Queen is depicted standing beneath an apple tree, offering an apple—her posture and expression duplicated across a vertical axis like a reflection, emphasizing the duality of perception and truth. Dividing these images are apples shown both whole and in cross-section, representing the contrast between outward beauty and inner nature—echoing the story’s themes of deception and purity.

These apple motifs are framed within ladder forms bordered by dots. In traditional pysanky, ladders symbolize ascension and transcendence—rising above jealousy, vanity, and the superficial. Dots represent seeds, signifying potential, fertility, and the hidden power within.

Encircling the egg are two meander bands featuring a stylized water motif. Water, in pysanky, stands for infinity and the eternal cycle of life and death—a subtle nod to Snow White’s enchanted sleep and the timeless nature of her tale.

Each end of the egg is adorned with an 8-pointed star motif. Stars are one of the most common motifs found on pysanky. They are usually eight pointed, and the large ones found on the sides or tops and bottoms of pysanky are called ruzhi. The ruzhi in this design are formed by outer triangles filled with resheto—a cross-hatched net pattern. Resheto carries protective meaning, believed to filter out evil and guard against malevolent spirits.

More than an ornament, this egg serves as both as a storytelling device and a talismanic object—much like pysanky have traditionally been used to protect, bless, and tell stories across generations.

Each egg measures approximately 2.5 inches long.
